How to Experience God's Love Through a Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ
Becoming a Christian is a personal journey of faith, not a rigid checklist of “to-do” items. At its core, it centers on building a real, living relationship with Jesus Christ through belief, repentance, and commitment.
Here is the most important thing you need to know right now: You don’t need to “clean yourself up” before you come to God. You can be forgiven, experience his grace, and begin a completely new life in Christ immediately, with the absolute assurance of eternal life in heaven with God.
If you are ready to start that journey, it generally begins with a few foundational truths:
Recognize
Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh and the architect of all creation. Out of profound love for you, he lived an earthly life entirely without sin and submitted himself to a painful death on the cross two thousand years ago to satisfy the debt for your transgressions.
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21, ESV)
Know
He is one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He loves you, desires a personal relationship with you, and is actively drawing you to himself even now.
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.” (John 6:44, ESV)
Admit
Recognize that you are a sinner and fall short of God’s perfect, holy standard. Acknowledge that you cannot save yourself by your own good works and that you desperately need his forgiveness.
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3:23, ESV)
Believe
Trust completely that Jesus Christ—the Son of God—lived a perfect life, died on the cross to pay the exact penalty for your sins, and rose from the dead, defeating death forever.
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4, ESV)
Confess and Pray
Confess your faith in Jesus publicly and pray to God to forgive your sins and take control of your life. You can express this in your own unique words, or use the prayer below to help you get started.
“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” (Romans 10:9–10, ESV)
A Prayer for Salvation
Are you ready to be forgiven and know God personally right now? If this reflects the desire of your heart, you can pray a prayer like this:
“Dear God, I admit that I am a sinner and have fallen short of Your standards. I am sorry for my sins, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe that Your Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross to pay for my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. Today, I turn away from my old life and invite Jesus to come into my heart as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for Your grace, Your love, and the gift of eternal life. Amen.”
Next Steps to Grow Your Faith
Once you have made the decision to follow Christ, the lifelong, rewarding process of growing spiritually begins. To learn and mature in your new faith, focus on these three pillars:
- Read the Bible: Start with the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) to learn directly about the life, ministry, and teachings of Jesus.
- Connect with a Community: Faith is not meant to be practiced in isolation. Find a local, Bible-believing church where you can fellowship, find encouragement, and walk alongside other believers.
- Get Baptized: Baptism is your next step of obedience. It is a beautiful public symbol of dying to your old life and being raised to a brand-new life in Christ.
